The 10 Highest-Paid Soccer Managers of 2014-15
The top-tier
soccer managers at the club and international levels are nearly as
famous as are the best footballers in the world. Those bosses claim
titles for their organizations. Supporters sing chants and songs in
their honor.
Managers who achieve successes on the biggest stages of the games are financially set for life.
La Liga, believed by many to be the best league in the world, is not responsible for any of the five highest-paid managers in soccer. Serie A does not even make the list. Long-time rivals take up spots No. 1 and No. 2, but neither won the Champions League last season.
These are the 10 highest-paid soccer managers of 2014-15.
Benfica
are not giants compared with the other clubs in this list. They are not
true Champions League title contenders on a consistent basis. The
Portuguese side cannot afford to sign and pay top talents such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale or Lionel Messi.
That said, Jesus has earned that $5 million and then some during his five years at Benfica.
The Portuguese manager has twice won the league while at Benfica. He is a four-time Portuguese League Cup champion coach. Benfica are back-to-back Europa League runners-up under Jesus.
Pellegrini’s
spot on the list may surprise some considering the amount of money City
have at their disposal and how much cash the club splashes in summer
transfer windows. City certainly can afford to have the highest-paid
manager in all of world soccer. City Football Group have a minority
share in Yokohama F. Marinos, and they are majority owners of Melbourne
City FC and Major League Soccer expansion side New York City Football
Club.
Pellegrini has been worth every cent of his paycheck since joining City after the 2012-13 Premier League season. City defeated Sunderland to win the League Cup last March. They won the Premier League title in May.
Klopp
is a favorite among the Dortmund faithful and also supporters who call
no Bundesliga side their own. He is as known for his pitch-side fashion
decisions as he is for the gestures and facial expressions that he makes
during games. Some recently wondered if Klopp had perhaps over-prepared for a Champions League fixture.
No jokes can be made about what Klopp has achieved while at Dortmund. He has twice won the Bundesliga title. Dortmund are back-to-back and reigning DFL-Supercup champions under Klopp. He helped lead the German side to the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League Final, a match that Dortmund lost to rivals Bayern Munich.
Critics predict Wenger‘s
demise every fall, and the Arsenal boss proves those individuals wrong
each and every season. The Gunners consistently finish ahead of rivals
Tottenham Hotspur, a club that changes managers about every other
season, in the Premier League table. Arsenal are Champions League
mainstays under Wenger.
One would think that the 64-year-old will now catch some breaks among the Arsenal faithful. Not only did he once again lead the club to the Champions League, but Arsenal ended a long trophy drought when they won the FA Cup last May.
Real
Madrid, like Manchester City, could easily afford to have the
highest-paid manager in all of world football. No franchise is worth
more than Real at the moment. Forbes recently valued the club at $3.44 billion. That same report claims that Real made $675 million in revenue last year.
Wow.
Real Madrid have gotten off to a slow start this season, but don’t go burying Ancelloti just yet. The Spanish giants defeated rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey Final last April. Real then achieved Champions League glory when Gareth Bale nodded home the title-winner in the Final.
What a year and a half it has been for Manchester United. Living legend Alex Ferguson announced that he was retiring, and David Moyes
was appointed his replacement. United floundered under their new boss,
however, and Moyes didn’t manage to last the entire season before he was
sacked by the club.
It’s now on Van Gaal to play the role of United savior.
Van Gaal has quite the impressive resume. He has won titles at Ajax, Barcelona, AZ and Bayern. Van Gaal’s most recent accomplishment was leading Holland to a third-place finish at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
No national team manager makes more money on a yearly basis than Capello.
He has not yet proven himself to be worth his massive paycheck. Russia,
who will host the 2018 FIFA World Cup, could not get out of the group
stage of the 2014 summer tournament.
That did not sit well with the Russian Federation.
Capello was asked to appear before the Russian Parliament to explain why Russia were such a disappointment at the 2014 World Cup. The Russian National team is reportedly leaking money, to the point that it was announced in August that Capello and other members of his staff received zero payments for three straight months.
You really do get what you pay for.
What club is that, you ask? Guangzhou Evergrande are in the Chinese Super League. Lippi
has thus far been a hit for Guangzhou since signing for the team in May
2012. Guangzhou won the league the past two seasons. They lifted the
AFC Champions League trophy in 2013.
Aside from what he has accomplished in China, Lippi is most known for his work in Serie A. He is a three-time Serie A Coach of the Year, and he has five Serie A titles to his name. Lippi led Italy to the 2006 World Cup Final, and the Italians beat France in the Final to win the tournament.
Mou. The Special One. The Only One. The Happy One. Call Mourinho whatever you want. Just make sure that you also refer to him as a winner.
Mourinho has done it all in club football. He has won league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain. He has hoisted the Champions League trophy in celebration. Mourinho has earned UEFA and FIFA Manager of the Year honors.
Mourinho began his second stint at Chelsea in June 2013. That season was somewhat of a disappointment for the club. Chelsea finished third in the Premier League table, and they did not win a trophy.
The rival of Mourinho filled the Barcelona trophy case during his time as manager of the massive club. Guardiola
led Barca to multiple La Liga, Copa del Rey, Champions League, UEFA
Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles. He then became the hottest
managerial free agent in world football at the end of the 2011-12
season. Some linked him with a shock move to Major League Soccer at the
time.
That was not to be, as Guardiola signed with Bayern Munich. He has been a hit for the German giants, winning the Bundesliga, DFB Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Bayern have the money to possess the highest-paid manager in soccer, and Guardiola’s paydays have been earned.
